She keeps him captive in her remote home and forces him to write a novel to her liking. As the novel progresses, Paul discovers that Annie is a dangerous and unstable former nurse, and he must find a way to escape before she does more harm. The film was a critical and commercial success, receiving multiple Academy Award nominations including Best Actress for Kathy Bates, who won the award.

Along the way, their journey becomes increasingly perilous, and soon they must fight for their lives or risk becoming victims of the locals' revenge. The film was a critical and commercial success, and is considered to be one of the most influential films of the 1970s.
