Battle Royale is a Japanese film written, directed and edited by Kinji Fukasaku, released in 2000. Set in an alternate present-day Japan, the film follows a group of 42 ninth-grade students from a fictional junior high school who are selected to participate in a government-sponsored program called the "Battle Royale". The students are each given a bag with a randomly selected weapon and a few rations of food and water and sent to an island where they must fight each other until only one survives. The students must also deal with the issue of their individual morality and the choices they must make in order to survive. The film is a commentary on the then-contemporary political situation in Japan and the lack of communication between generations. It has gained a cult following and is considered one of the most influential films of the 2000s.
