Ben-Hur is a 1959 American epic historical drama film directed by William Wyler and starring Charlton Heston as the title character. The film tells the story of Judah Ben-Hur (Heston), a Jewish prince who is betrayed by his childhood friend Messala (Stephen Boyd), a Roman military tribune, and is forced into slavery. After years of suffering, Ben-Hur finds fortune and eventual salvation as he wins a chariot race and is reunited with his family. The film is based on Lew Wallace's 1880 novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ and also features a large supporting cast including Jack Hawkins, Haya Harareet, Hugh Griffith, Martha Scott, and Cathy O'Donnell.
