The story follows the brothers' struggles to maintain a sense of home, family, and peace in their lives after the war. The eldest son, Alfred (Aidan Quinn), returns to Montana to manage the family ranch, while Tristan (Brad Pitt) and Samuel (Henry Thomas) remain in Europe, struggling to come to terms with the horrors of war. Ultimately, Tristan returns and must face his inner demons while coming to terms with his love for his brother's fiancée, Susannah (Julia Ormond). As the brothers come to terms with their past, tensions build between them, culminating in a dramatic conclusion that tests their bond and loyalty to one another.
