Based on the 2007 non-fiction book of the same name by Marcus Luttrell, the film follows a team of United States Navy SEALs on an ill-fated mission to capture or kill a notorious Taliban leader in the mountainous border region of Afghanistan and Pakistan. The film begins in 2005 with Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell (Mark Wahlberg) and his team, consisting of Michael Murphy (Taylor Kitsch), Danny Dietz (Emile Hirsch), and Matt Axelson (Ben Foster), on a mission to capture or kill a high-ranking Taliban leader. After a fierce firefight, the team is forced to retreat and ultimately decides to call in a rescue helicopter to evacuate them. The chopper is shot down, leaving only Luttrell alive. Facing certain death, he is protected by local villagers who honor the Pashtun code of hospitality. Luttrell is eventually rescued and returns home to his family and friends.
