The film stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman as a married couple whose relationship is put to the test after they encounter temptation during a night apart. The film follows Dr. Bill Hartford and his wife, Alice, as they attend a Christmas party thrown by Bill's old medical school mentor, Victor Ziegler. After a series of events, Alice confesses to Bill her near-infidelity with a past lover, creating mistrust between them. The two are then separated for the night, and Bill embarks on a strange and mysterious journey, which brings him into contact with various mysterious and dangerous people, including a ritualistic masked orgy. The film is a psychological exploration of desire, fidelity, and the human need for connection and intimacy, as well as a meditation on the power of secrets and lies to corrode relationships.
