Eyes Wide Shut is an erotic psychological drama film directed by Stanley Kubrick and loosely based on Arthur Schnitzler's 1926 novella Traumnovelle. The film stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman as a married couple whose relationship is put to the test after they encounter temptation during a night apart. The film follows Dr. Bill Hartford and his wife, Alice, as they attend a Christmas party thrown by Bill's old medical school mentor, Victor Ziegler. After a series of events, Alice confesses to Bill her near-infidelity with a past lover, creating mistrust between them. The two are then separated for the night, and Bill embarks on a strange and mysterious journey, which brings him into contact with various mysterious and dangerous people, including a ritualistic masked orgy. The film is a psychological exploration of desire, fidelity, and the human need for connection and intimacy, as well as a meditation on the power of secrets and lies to corrode relationships.
