The Night of the Hunter is a classic 1955 film directed by Charles Laughton and starring Robert Mitchum, Shelley Winters, and Lillian Gish. It tells the story of a false preacher, Harry Powell (Mitchum), who marries a woman for her money and then sets out to find her two young children, John and Pearl, who hold the secret to the location of their mother's stolen fortune. Along the way, Powell is pursued by John and Pearl's Sheriff-Uncle, and a kindly elderly woman, Rachel Cooper (Gish). Together, they must battle Powell's dark and twisted ideology, as well as the harsh realities of life in the rural south during the Great Depression. In the end, Powell is defeated and justice is served. The film is considered a classic of its time, due to its unique blend of horror, suspense, and poetic imagery.
