The Dark Knight is a 2008 superhero film directed by Christopher Nolan. It is the second installment of the "Dark Knight" trilogy and a sequel to 2005's Batman Begins. The film follows Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) as he deals with the criminal mastermind known as The Joker (Heath Ledger) while also facing new threats from the mob and other criminals. In a desperate attempt to protect his city, Batman allies himself with Lieutenant Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and district attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart). The Dark Knight's ensemble cast also includes Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Eric Roberts. The film is a powerful and thought-provoking exploration of vigilantism, heroism, and justice. It also features stunning set pieces and thrilling action sequences. Ledger's performance as the Joker earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, posthumously. The Dark Knight is widely regarded as one of the greatest superhero films of all time.

With the help of Jim Gordon, Rachel Dawes and his allies, Batman begins to make a real difference in Gotham. Along the way, he faces off with the criminal mastermind Ra's al Ghul and his terror organization, The League of Shadows. With the city on the brink of destruction, Batman must use all of his skills and resources to save it. Ultimately, he must confront his own fears and make the ultimate sacrifice in order to save Gotham.
