American Beauty is a 1999 American drama film directed by Sam Mendes and written by Alan Ball. It stars Kevin Spacey as Lester Burnham, a middle-aged magazine writer who has a midlife crisis when he becomes infatuated with his teenage daughter's best friend, Angela (Mena Suvari). Lester's wife Carolyn (Annette Bening) is a successful real estate broker who is in an unhappy marriage and increasingly despises her husband. His daughter, Jane (Thora Birch), is a withdrawn teenager involved in a romantic relationship with Ricky (Wes Bentley), a drug dealer who lives next door. The film follows Lester's transformation as he becomes more aware of beauty in the world around him and takes control of his life. He quits his job, begins working out, and starts seeking out experiences he had missed out on in his life. This includes an affair with Angela, which he begins despite knowing his risk of being caught. As his life changes, the lives of the other characters also change in various ways, with each of them coming to terms with their own realities. The film ultimately ends with Lester's death, although it is left ambiguous as to whether it was a suicide or merely the result of his newfound zest for life
