Les Misérables is a 2012 British-American musical drama film directed by Tom Hooper and based on the 1862 French novel of the same name by Victor Hugo. Set in 19th-century France, it tells the story of ex-prisoner Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) and his quest for redemption after being released from prison. Valjean is pursued by an obsessive police inspector, Javert (Russell Crowe). Along the way, he befriends a struggling single mother, Fantine (Anne Hathaway), and helps her daughter, Cosette (Amanda Seyfried). Valjean eventually breaks his parole, and Javert relentlessly pursues him for years as Valjean attempts to make a new life for himself and Cosette. The movie also follows the story of the student revolutionary, Marius (Eddie Redmayne), who joins a group of young idealists as they fight for a better France. The film features an all-star cast singing songs from the stage musical, including "I Dreamed a Dream", "On My Own", and "One Day More".
