Hunger is a 2008 British-Irish historical drama film directed by Steve McQueen and written by Enda Walsh. The film tells the story of the 1981 Irish hunger strike and the life of Bobby Sands, a Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) volunteer who led the strike. It stars Michael Fassbender as Sands, alongside Liam Cunningham, Stuart Graham, and Liam McMahon. Set in Northern Ireland in 1981, the film tells the story of the hunger strike that took place in the Maze Prison. Sands, an IRA volunteer, leads the prisoners in their protest against the British government's insistence on treating them as criminals rather than prisoners of war. The story follows Sands' final weeks as he becomes more and more determined to maintain the strike, even as his health begins to fail. In the process, Sands forms a bond with a sympathetic prison guard, Raymond Lohan, who eventually comes to respect Sands' courage and commitment. As the strike continues, Sands' health deteriorates and he dies after 66 days of sustained hunger striking, becoming a powerful symbol for the struggle for Irish freedom.
