Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is a 2003 American swashbuckler film directed by Gore Verbinski. It is the first installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean film series, and stars Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightley. The story follows pirate Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) and his rag-tag crew as they search for the legendary Black Pearl ship, in order to lift a curse that has been placed upon them. Along the way they encounter the villainous captain, Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), and his crew of cursed pirates. They must then find a way to defeat him and save their ship and the town of Port Royal. The film was a massive success at the box office, becoming the fifth-highest-grossing film of 2003, and was also praised by critics for its originality and special effects.

Serenity is a 2005 science fiction action-adventure film written and directed by Joss Whedon. It tells the story of the crew of the Firefly-class spaceship Serenity, who are hired by a passenger of theirs to undertake a mission of great importance as they struggle to stay one step ahead of their deadly enemies. The crew, led by Mal Reynolds, is comprised of his first mate Zoe Washburne, pilot Hoban "Wash" Washburne, mercenary Jayne Cobb, mechanic Kaylee Frye, doctor Simon Tam, and his psychic sister River. They have to protect River from the Alliance, a corrupt government agency, while trying to complete their mission. Along the way, they must also contend with the Reavers, a savage race of humanoids. In the end, the crew of Serenity must rely on each other to survive and complete their mission.

Captain Phillips is a 2013 American biographical drama directed by Paul Greengrass and starring Tom Hanks. Based on the true story of the 2009 hijacking of the US container ship Maersk Alabama by Somali pirates, the film follows the tense negotiations between Captain Richard Phillips (Hanks) and the pirates, led by Abduwali Muse (Barkhad Abdi). When the pirates board the ship and take Phillips and his crew hostage, the captain must find a way to keep his crew safe, prevent the pirates from taking control of the ship, and ultimately survive. The film also depicts the efforts of the U.S. military to catch the pirates and rescue Phillips. Ultimately, Phillips and the crew are saved and the pirates are apprehended and taken into custody.

Captain Blood is a swashbuckling adventure film set in the 17th century Caribbean. Exiled Irish doctor Peter Blood (Errol Flynn) is unjustly arrested and sold into slavery. With the help of a loyal band of pirates, he escapes captivity and reclaims his freedom to become the notorious Captain Blood. Along with his comrades, he sails the Caribbean in search of adventure, treasure, and justice for the oppressed. In the process, he falls in love with the beautiful Lady Arabella (Olivia de Havilland), and the two must outwit the evil French Governor (Lionel Atwill) and his treacherous crew in order to be together.
