It consists of eight animated segments set to classical music selections and conducted by the film's musical director, Leopold Stokowski. The film's story revolves around the Sorcerer's Apprentice, a character from a German poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. In the film, Mickey Mouse stars as the apprentice, who is tasked with carrying out his master's chores. However, when the apprentice decides to use the magic hat to speed up his work, the result is chaos. Other segments include abstract, computer-generated imagery set to Toccata and Fugue in D Minor by Johann Sebastian Bach, a dinosaur ballet to The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky, and a fantasy world with fairies and mushrooms to The Nutcracker Suite by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, among many others.
