The film follows the attempts of Dr. Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins) to bring Merrick out of his solitary existence in a London hospital and give him a chance to experience some of the joys of life. The film is ultimately a story of compassion, courage, and understanding, as Merrick is able to overcome the odds and find a place for himself in the world.

It has since become a cult classic and has been nominated for several awards.

The film also follows Bateman's colleagues and acquaintances as they become increasingly suspicious of his activities, eventually leading to his downfall.

Brundle begins to feel a transformation come over himself and soon discovers he has slowly begun to merge with a housefly during a test of his teleportation device. As the transformation goes on and the fly DNA starts to take over, Brundle begins to exhibit superhuman strength and agility, along with the grotesque appearance of a human-fly hybrid. His lover, Veronica, is horrified, and the two must ultimately confront the terrifying consequences of the experiment gone wrong.
