The Shining is a psychological horror film directed by Stanley Kubrick and based on Stephen King's 1977 novel of the same name. The film follows the Torrance family—Jack (Jack Nicholson), Wendy (Shelley Duvall), and Danny (Danny Lloyd)—as they move into the isolated Overlook Hotel for the winter. Jack's main duty is to care for the grounds as the hotel's winter caretaker. Despite warnings from the hotel's chef, Dick Hallorann (Scatman Crothers), Jack's sanity begins to unravel as he gradually becomes possessed by supernatural forces within the hotel. Wendy and Danny soon find themselves in a frantic and desperate struggle to survive Jack's descent into madness. As Jack's madness and violence reach a fever pitch, the hotel is revealed to contain a terrifying supernatural presence that has been manipulating Jack all along. In the end, Wendy and Danny must escape the hotel as it goes up in flames, leaving Jack's fate unknown.
