The film follows the lives of wrestlers past and present, including the soap opera-like storylines, their highs and lows, and their dedication to their craft. It primarily focuses on wrestlers Mick Foley, Terry Funk and Jake Roberts and their personal struggles both in and out of the ring. The film features interviews with Vince McMahon, the then-chairman of the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) and other wrestlers such as The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and Triple H. Beyond the Mat examines not only the physical toll professional wrestling takes on its performers, but also how the wrestlers' personal lives are often destroyed by the necessity of performing. The film shows the lengths some will go to in order to stay in the spotlight and the mental and physical toll it can take on their lives.
