Fried Green Tomatoes is a 1991 American comedy-drama film directed by Jon Avnet and based on the novel by Fannie Flagg of the same name. The story follows the lives of two women, Evelyn Couch (Kathy Bates) and Ninny Threadgoode (Jessica Tandy). Evelyn, a middle-aged, unhappy housewife, meets Ninny, an elderly woman, at a nursing home while visiting her husband. Ninny tells Evelyn the story of Idgie Threadgoode (Mary Stuart Masterson) and Ruth Jamison (Mary-Louise Parker), two women living in Alabama during the 1920s. Idgie and Ruth run a successful café in the Southern small town of Whistle Stop and become best friends, creating a strong bond between them. As the story progresses, Evelyn discovers how Idgie and Ruth's friendship overcomes racism and oppression. The film also highlights themes of female friendship, courage, and empowerment.

Along the way, they pick up a male hitchhiker, who is soon revealed to be a criminal. In the end, the two friends commit suicide by driving off a cliff rather than surrendering to the police.
