Gladiator is a 2000 epic historical drama film directed by Ridley Scott and starring Russell Crowe. The film tells the story of the fictional general, Maximus Decimus Meridius (Crowe) who is betrayed when the emperor's ambitious son, Commodus, assassinates his father and seizes the throne. Reduced to slavery, Maximus rises through the ranks of the gladiatorial arena to avenge the murder of his family and regain his freedom. Through his struggle, he also gains the sympathy of the people as a heroic figure and saves Rome from the tyranny of Commodus.
