Citizenfour is a documentary film directed by Laura Poitras which follows the story of Edward Snowden, a former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor who leaked classified information to the public in 2013. The film begins on the 8th of June, 2013 in Hong Kong, when Snowden first contacted Poitras and journalist Glenn Greenwald to reveal his identity and story. The film then depicts the three of them discussing the material Snowden had obtained, and the public implications of such a massive leak. Through interviews with Snowden, The Guardian journalists, and Snowden’s legal advisor, Citizenfour delves into the personal risks Snowden took in order to expose what he saw as wrongs committed by the U.S. government. It goes on to discuss the public debate on the value of privacy versus security, as well as the implications of the NSA’s global surveillance program. In the end, the film serves as a testament to Edward Snowden’s courage, heroism, and self-sacrifice.

As the Iranian revolutionaries storm the American embassy and take the staff hostage, the six Americans escape to the Canadian embassy and are instructed to stay inside. To rescue them, Mendez creates a fake movie production and pretends to be scouting locations in Iran as cover. With the help of the studio and the Canadian government, Mendez is able to bring the six Americans safely back to the U.S., where their rescue is hailed as a diplomatic triumph.
