District 9 is a science fiction action film, set in a world where aliens have been living in South Africa for the past thirty years. After an alien ship appears in Johannesburg, the government forces the aliens, known as 'prawns', into a slum known as District 9. After a multi-national corporation takes over control of the district, a man named Wikus Van De Merwe is put in charge of relocating the aliens. During his mission, Wikus is exposed to an alien virus which slowly transforms him into an alien himself. As his transformation progresses, Wikus must find a way to save himself, while simultaneously struggling to protect the aliens of District 9. He discovers that the aliens have been working on a plan to return to their home world, and he joins them in their mission to do so. In the end, Wikus succeeds in returning the aliens to their home planet, and becomes a hero in the process.
