The Shining is a psychological horror film directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall. The film follows the story of Jack Torrance, an aspiring writer and recovering alcoholic, who takes a job as the winter caretaker at the isolated Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rockies. He moves in with his wife, Wendy, and son, Danny, who is gifted with “the shining” — psychic abilities that enable him to see the hotel’s horrific past. As the Torrances settle in at the hotel, Jack’s sanity begins to unravel, and he becomes possessed by the demonic forces which inhabit the Overlook. The terrifying events that follow test the strength of the Torrance family and threaten to destroy them.

The Thing is a 1982 science fiction horror film directed by John Carpenter and written by Bill Lancaster. The film stars Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, Keith David, Richard Dysart, Charles Hallahan, and T. K. Carter. The film follows a team of scientists and U.S. Army personnel at a research outpost in Antarctica who are terrorized by an alien life form that assimilates and imitates other organisms. After a dog is brought to the outpost by helicopter, the alien takes the form of the dog and begins to hunt and kill the team, eventually assimilating other members of the group. In the end, R.J. MacReady, the only survivor of the group, is left to battle the alien creature. The Thing received mixed reviews upon release, but has since become a cult classic and is widely regarded as one of the greatest horror films of all time.

Evil Dead II is a horror-comedy sequel to the 1981 film Evil Dead. Directed by Sam Raimi, the movie follows Ash Williams as he attempts to rid himself of the evil forces at work in a remote cabin. After reading from the infamous Necronomicon, Ash releases a horde of demons and Deadites who possess and terrorize him. Despite increasingly desperate and dangerous odds, Ash eventually fights back and triumphs over the evil forces. The movie is noted for its inventive special effects and slapstick humor.
