American Beauty is a 1999 drama film that follows the life of Lester Burnham, a middle-aged, middle class man who is unhappy with his life and the world around him. He is dissatisfied with his marriage to Carolyn, his materialistic and controlling wife, and is unfulfilled by his job at a local magazine. In an attempt to reclaim his youth, Lester begins to make changes in his life, including beginning an affair with his daughter's friend Angela, and quitting his job to become a fast-food worker. At the same time, Lester's daughter, Jane, is dealing with her own issues of low self-esteem and discovers a newfound appreciation for her father. As their lives collide, the Burnham family struggles to find their place in a world that seems to lack any real beauty. In the end, Lester rediscovers the joys of life and learns to appreciate the beauty in the world around him.

When a handsome and talented young student, Walter Klemmer, begins attending her classes, Erika is unable to control her powerful attraction to him. This leads to a complex and twisted relationship between the two that escalates quickly, with both of them pushing the boundaries of propriety and morality. Eventually, they take their relationship to a violent and dangerous level, forcing Erika to confront her sadistic and masochistic nature and ultimately make a choice between her own desires and her duty as a teacher.
