As their lives collide, the Burnham family struggles to find their place in a world that seems to lack any real beauty. In the end, Lester rediscovers the joys of life and learns to appreciate the beauty in the world around him.

When a handsome and talented young student, Walter Klemmer, begins attending her classes, Erika is unable to control her powerful attraction to him. This leads to a complex and twisted relationship between the two that escalates quickly, with both of them pushing the boundaries of propriety and morality. Eventually, they take their relationship to a violent and dangerous level, forcing Erika to confront her sadistic and masochistic nature and ultimately make a choice between her own desires and her duty as a teacher.
