The Elephant Man is a 1980 American biographical drama film directed by David Lynch. The film tells the story of John Merrick, a severely deformed man in late 19th century London. After he is found by a doctor and taken to a famous London hospital, Merrick is subjected to cruelty and ridicule by the hospital staff and visitors. However, he eventually gains the respect and friendship of the hospital's proprietor, Dr. Frederick Treves, who helps him to find solace and eventually, celebrity status. Through his friendship with Dr. Treves and his newfound notoriety, Merrick is eventually able to find refuge and peace in his suffering.
