It is set in a run-down convenience store in New Jersey and explores topics such as relationships, boredom, and the meaning of life. Dante is stuck in a dead-end job, trying to figure out what he wants to do with his life. He is in love with his ex-girlfriend, but she is engaged to another man. Meanwhile, Randal is irresponsible and immature, and often gets Dante in trouble. Throughout the film, Dante and Randal interact with numerous colorful characters, such as Jay and Silent Bob, who give them advice and reflect on their own lives. In the end, Clerks serves as a commentary on the mundane and often meaningless lives of those stuck in dead-end jobs.
