Into the Wild is a 2007 American biographical drama film directed by Sean Penn. It is an adaptation of Jon Krakauer's 1996 nonfiction book of the same name, based on the travels of Christopher McCandless across North America and his life spent in the Alaskan wilderness in the early 1990s. The film tells the story of Christopher McCandless, a young man from a privileged background who gave away all his money, abandoned his possessions, and hitchhiked to Alaska to live in the wilderness. Along his journey, he befriends a variety of people, including Jan and Rainey, a pair of hippies; Ron Franz, an elderly man who becomes a mentor to McCandless; and Tracy, a young girl from a broken home. As his journey progresses, however, McCandless finds himself in increasingly dangerous situations and is eventually forced to confront his own mortality. In the end, McCandless comes to the realization that love and acceptance are the most important things in life.
