Battle Royale is a 2000 Japanese dystopian action film directed by Kinji Fukasaku. It is based on the 1999 novel of the same name by Koushun Takami. The film follows a group of junior high school students who are forced to compete in a government-mandated battle royale, in which they must fight to the death until only one survivor is left standing. The film has been widely praised for its depiction of violence and its commentary on Japanese society and culture. It has also been criticized for its explicit violence and themes of brutality.
