In order to mine unobtanium, the humans create avatars, who are Na'vi-human hybrids controlled by human operators, to interact with the natives. One of the avatars, created for a paraplegic Marine named Jake Sully, is accepted into the Na'vi tribe and falls in love with a female Na'vi named Neytiri. As Jake learns more about the Na'vi's way of life, he uncovers a plot by the humans to destroy their sacred tree, threatening the entire Na'vi civilization. Jake must choose between his human loyalties and the Na'vi, ultimately leading a battle to save the Na'vi's home from the humans. Through his actions, Jake helps bridge the two cultures and is accepted into the Na'vi tribe as one of their own.
