In the end, the US Navy successfully rescues the crew, but at a great cost.

It is set in 1928 Los Angeles and follows the story of single mother Christine Collins, an employee of the telephone company, who has her nine-year-old son Walter mysteriously disappear. Desperate to find him she works with the police, offering a reward and putting up posters. However, five months later the police present her with a boy they claim is Walter, though Christine insists it is not her son. The authorities, desperate to close the case, ignore her claims and force her to accept the boy. Christine then engages in a battle with the police department to prove the boy is not her son. This leads to her being committed to a mental hospital, where a doctor discovers her story is true. After her release, Christine begins a campaign to expose the truth of her son's disappearance and the police's cover-up. Ultimately she is successful, successfully bringing the truth to light. The film ends with Christine giving a speech on the steps of city hall, in which she advocates for the rights of children everywhere.
