The Shining is a 1980 psychological horror film directed by Stanley Kubrick. It is based on the 1977 novel of the same name by Stephen King. The film follows the Torrance family— Jack (Jack Nicholson), Wendy (Shelley Duvall), and Danny (Danny Lloyd)— who move into the isolated Overlook Hotel, which is managed by Jack. Danny has telepathic powers, referred to as "the shining", which allow him to see horrific visions of the hotel's past. Jack slowly begins to lose his sanity as he becomes increasingly possessive of his family and is haunted by a spirit that resides in the hotel. As his mental state deteriorates, Danny is forced to use his "the shining" powers to protect himself and his family from his father's increasingly violent behavior. The film is a masterful blend of psychological horror and suspense, ultimately exploring the power of the supernatural and the consequences of unchecked ambition.

Fargo is a 1996 black comedy-crime film written, produced, and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. The film stars Frances McDormand as Marge Gunderson, a pregnant police chief investigating rural car dealership owner, Jerry Lundegaard's (William H. Macy) double-crossing scheme. The film also stars Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare as two criminals hired by Lundegaard to kidnap his wife, Jean (Kristin Rudrüd). The story follows Marge as she investigates the kidnapping, which leads to the discovery of a string of homicides related to the scheme. Along the way, she encounters a variety of eccentric characters, including a car salesman, a suspiciously unhelpful police officer, and a domineering and foul-mouthed criminal. As her investigation progresses, Marge begins to unravel the complex web of lies and deception that Lundegaard has woven. Fargo received seven Academy Award nominations, winning Best Original Screenplay and Best Actress for McDormand. It is also considered one of the Coen brothers' greatest films, and has been listed as one of the greatest films of all time.

Annie demands that Paul write a novel of her own choosing, manipulating and tormenting him in order to force him to comply. Eventually, Paul must escape Annie's clutches, or risk further danger and potential death. The film features a stellar performance from Kathy Bates, who won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Annie. The film was a critical and commercial success, and remains one of the most successful Stephen King adaptations to date.
