The story is about three brothers - Alfred, Tristan, and Samuel - and their father, Colonel William Ludlow, living in the remote and rugged Montana wilderness in the early 1900s. The three brothers, who are of Native American, English, and Scots heritage, are significantly different from each other. Tristan is a restless, rebellious spirit, while Alfred is sensible and responsible, and Samuel is sensitive and intellectual. They share an intense bond of loyalty and love, despite the conflict between them. When World War I erupts, Alfred and Tristan enlist, but Samuel refuses to fight and stays home. While the brothers are away, Tristan falls in love with Susannah, the fiancée of Alfred. Unknown to Alfred and Tristan, Susannah and Samuel have a close friendship and she eventually falls in love with Samuel. When Tristan returns from the war, his actions ignite a tragic chain of events that leads to a violent confrontation between Tristan and Alfred.
