Apocalypto is a 2006 epic adventure drama film directed by Mel Gibson and written by Gibson and Farhad Safinia. The film features a cast of Native American and Indigenous Mexican actors and tells the story of a Mesoamerican warrior who must escape human sacrifice and rescue his family during the decline of the once powerful Maya civilization. The story follows Jaguar Paw, a young man living in a remote village in the rainforest who, along with the other members of his tribe, is captured by a group of warriors, led by Zero Wolf. Taken away to a Mayan city, Jaguar Paw and his fellow villagers are chosen as sacrificial victims to be offered up to appease the gods. With time running out, Jaguar Paw must brave a hostile jungle and the oppressive forces of the Mayan city in order to save his family and his people. Along the way, he must outwit enemies, survive obstacles and fight for his freedom.
