Saving Private Ryan is a 1998 American epic war drama film directed by Steven Spielberg, starring Tom Hanks and Matt Damon. The film is set during the Invasion of Normandy in World War II. It tells the story of several United States Army Rangers who are given the task of finding and rescuing Private James Ryan, a paratrooper who is the sole surviving brother of four siblings killed in action on the same day. Their mission is complicated by the fact that the Germans are preparing for a large-scale counterattack against the Allies and the area is heavily fortified. As the Rangers battle their way through the German lines, they must also grapple with their own personal and moral conflicts. In the end, the mission is a success and Private Ryan is saved. The film explores the brutalities of war and the courage and sacrifice of the soldiers who fight it.
