The narrator becomes embroiled in a relationship with Durden and a dissolute woman, Marla Singer, played by Helena Bonham Carter. The narrator's mental health deteriorates as he becomes addicted to the unrestrained lifestyle of the fight club, which escalates into an underground organization called "Project Mayhem". The film's social commentary explores themes of male identity, generational conflict and consumerism.
