Merrick is exploited as a freak show attraction until a sympathetic doctor, Frederick Treves, intervenes and offers him refuge in a London hospital. Treves helps Merrick to gain acceptance and respect, despite his physical deformities, and shows him compassion and understanding. The Elephant Man is a powerful exploration of the inhumane treatment of the disabled and the way in which society tends to mistreat those who are different.

The Fly is a 1986 horror-science fiction film directed by David Cronenberg. It tells the story of Seth Brundle, a scientist who accidentally gets transformed into a human-fly hybrid after a teleportation experiment gone wrong. He slowly becomes more and more fly-like, both mentally and physically, as he becomes more and more desperate to find a cure. His former lover, Veronica, attempts to help him, but soon discovers that he is beyond saving. In the end, Seth is killed in an act of self-sacrifice that allows Veronica to escape. The Fly is a classic example of Cronenberg's body horror genre and remains one of his most popular films.
