It is based on the real life story of Joseph Merrick, an English man who suffered from extreme physical deformities. Merrick is exploited as a freak show attraction until a sympathetic doctor, Frederick Treves, intervenes and offers him refuge in a London hospital. Treves helps Merrick to gain acceptance and respect, despite his physical deformities, and shows him compassion and understanding. The Elephant Man is a powerful exploration of the inhumane treatment of the disabled and the way in which society tends to mistreat those who are different.

The Fly is a classic example of Cronenberg's body horror genre and remains one of his most popular films.
