Bowling for Columbine is a 2002 documentary film written, produced, directed, and narrated by Michael Moore. The film explores what Moore suggests are the primary causes for the Columbine High School massacre in 1999 and other acts of violence with guns. Moore interviews various people, including Marilyn Manson, the National Rifle Association's (NRA) then president Charlton Heston, and panic-buying citizens, in order to explore and criticize the United States' cultures of fear and gun violence. The film also highlights the US's history of violence, its widespread availability of firearms and its high murder rate, as well as the media's role in all of these. Moore also looks at other countries to contrast the US's attitudes towards guns and violence. At the end of the film, Moore proposes solutions and proposes that gun violence can be reduced through reasonable regulation.

It follows five students from different social cliques—the "principal's daughter", the "athlete," the "basket case," the "criminal" and the "brain"—who all spend a Saturday in detention together. During the detention, the students learn more about each other and form a bond as they discover how they are all more than what the labels they have given each other suggest. At the end of the day, despite their differences, the group is able to come together to realize that they are all just struggling to fit in and be accepted by their peers.
