It follows the story of a professional hitman, Léon (Jean Reno), who takes in a young girl, Mathilda (Natalie Portman), after her family is murdered by a corrupt DEA agent. Léon and Mathilda develop a close bond as he trains her in the art of assassination to help her exact revenge on the agent. As their relationship develops, Léon must protect Mathilda from his own employers as well as her family's killers. The film follows their struggle for survival as they face off against the criminal underworld of New York City.

The film is told in two different sequences; one in which events are shown in chronological order, and another in which they are shown in reverse order. As the film progresses, viewers are given key clues that help to explain the mystery of why Leonard is unable to remember anything beyond fifteen minutes. The film culminates in an unexpected twist that reveals the truth behind the murder. Memento is a thought-provoking and emotionally intense experience that is sure to stay with viewers long after they finish watching it.

Kowalski eventually comes to terms with the Hmong community and helps Thao and his family gain respect in the neighborhood. As Kowalski's relationship with the Hmong community develops, he finds himself increasingly at odds with the local gang. In the end, Kowalski stands up to the gang and musters the courage to do the right thing.
