Gladiator is a 2000 epic historical drama directed by Ridley Scott and starring Russell Crowe. Set in the Roman Empire of 180 A.D., the story follows a once-powerful general (Maximus Decimus Meridius) who is reduced to a slave after a corrupt emperor (Commodus) murders his family and seizes power. Maximus is forced to fight in the gladiator arena as a way to gain his freedom and eventually defeat the emperor. Along the way, he is aided by loyal friends and fellow gladiators, and also discovers an unexpected connection to his past. In the end, Maximus defeats Commodus and is granted his freedom.
