The Lives of Others is an award-winning 2006 German drama film directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. Set in East Berlin in 1984, the film focuses on Stasi captain Gerd Wiesler and his surveillance of a playwright, Georg Dreyman and his actress-girlfriend, Christa-Maria Sieland. Wiesler's monitoring of the couple gradually reveals his own humanity, eventually leading him to help them in their struggle against the East German government.
