The two eventually make it to safety, but not before facing the harsh realities of war along the way. The film is an emotional and powerful look at the struggles of refugees during the war, and it won numerous awards, including two German Film Awards and a Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.

The story is set during the height of the Cold War and is based on Tom Clancy's 1984 novel of the same name. The cast also includes Alec Baldwin, Scott Glenn, Sam Neill, James Earl Jones, and Tim Curry. The film was a commercial and critical success, earning over $200 million at the box office and receiving several Academy Award nominations.
