The Boat is a 1981 German drama directed by Wolfgang Petersen and starring Jürgen Prochnow and Herbert Grönemeyer. Set during World War II, the film follows a father and son as they attempt to make their way across the Baltic Sea to escape Nazi Germany in a small fishing boat. Along the way, they face numerous obstacles, including perilous storms, a hidden minefield, and a British destroyer. The two eventually make it to safety, but not before facing the harsh realities of war along the way. The film is an emotional and powerful look at the struggles of refugees during the war, and it won numerous awards, including two German Film Awards and a Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.

The Hunt for Red October is a 1990 Cold War-era action-adventure-thriller directed by John McTiernan. The movie follows a Russian submarine commander, Marko Ramius (Sean Connery), who decides to defect to the United States with the advanced submarine, Red October. The United States Navy must try to track and capture the submarine before the crew of the Red October can hand it over to U.S. intelligence. The story is set during the height of the Cold War and is based on Tom Clancy's 1984 novel of the same name. The cast also includes Alec Baldwin, Scott Glenn, Sam Neill, James Earl Jones, and Tim Curry. The film was a commercial and critical success, earning over $200 million at the box office and receiving several Academy Award nominations.
