Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a 2004 romantic science-fiction comedy-drama film written by Charlie Kaufman and directed by Michel Gondry. The movie follows a couple struggling through the aftermath of a relationship. Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) is an introverted man reeling from a break-up with his ex-girlfriend, Clementine (Kate Winslet). He learns that Clementine has undergone a medical procedure to erase all memories of their relationship from her mind. To get revenge, he decides to undergo the same procedure to erase all of his memories of Clementine. During the procedure, Joel is taken back to various moments of his relationship with Clementine and finds himself unwilling to let go of his memories. As he struggles to keep the memories alive, he begins to question the nature of love and relationships and whether they are truly worth sacrificing. In the end, Joel decides to keep his memories, choosing love over forgetting.
