The Seventh Seal is a 1957 Swedish drama film written and directed by Ingmar Bergman. Set in Sweden during the Black Death, it tells the story of a knight and his encounters with death. After encountering Death on a desolate beach, the knight challenges Death to a game of chess in order to stave off his own mortality. The knight's journey is full of philosophical musings on the meaning of life and the inevitability of death. Along the way, the knight meets a group of traveling players and a young family that struggles to survive in a world ravaged by the plague. Ultimately, the knight is forced to confront his own mortality. The film is an exploration of faith, mortality, and the ultimate futility of existence.
