3 out of 4 stars

From Alfred Hitchcock, starring Rod Taylor, Tippi Hedren, Jessica Tandy, Suzanne Pleshette
Rated PG-13

The film follows Melanie Daniels, a wealthy socialite who meets Mitch Brenner in a birds of prey shop in San Francisco. After a brief courtship, they decide to take a trip to Mitch's hometown of Bodega Bay, California. Once they arrive, they find the town being terrorized by flocks of attacking birds. The birds have been behaving erratically and aggressively, attacking people and destroying property. As the situation escalates, the inhabitants of Bodega Bay are forced to fight back in order to survive. The film was Hitchcock's first foray into horror and suspense, and he uses dramatic techniques such as slow motion and point of view shots to increase the tension. The film contains a powerful message about nature, as it suggests that the birds are acting out of revenge for the destruction of their habitats. It is an eerie, suspenseful classic that stands the test of time.
