Watership Down is a 1978 British animated adventure-drama film written, produced and directed by Martin Rosen, based on the 1972 novel of the same name by Richard Adams. The film follows a small group of rabbits as they flee their ancestral home of Sandleford Warren to establish a new home at nearby Watership Down. Led by the visionary rabbit Fiver, they must battle predators, travel across treacherous terrain and endure confrontations with other rabbit societies as they struggle to establish their safe haven. Along the way, they meet other rabbits who join their cause and become part of their extended family. The film features the voices of John Hurt, Richard Briers and Michael Graham Cox as Fiver, Hazel, and Bigwig respectively. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards, for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Song, and was the first animated film to be nominated for the former. In addition to its critical and commercial success, Watership Down has become a cult classic, praised for its thought-provoking and powerful story, detailed animation and stunning score by Angela Morley and Malcolm Williamson.
