Umberto D. is a 1952 Italian neorealist film directed by Vittorio De Sica. The film follows the story of an elderly pensioner named Umberto Domenico Ferrari (Carlo Battisti), a retired civil servant in Rome who is struggling to find the money to pay his rent. Despite his desperate attempts to keep his home, Umberto is ultimately evicted and is forced to wander the streets with his dog Flike, desperately searching for a place to stay. Along the way, he encounters a number of characters who help him in his quest to find a home - including a sympathetic maid (Maria Pia Casilio) and a young student (Lina Gennari) - but his situation only grows more desperate as his funds and options dwindle. Ultimately, Umberto is forced to make a difficult decision about his future. Umberto D. is a heartbreakingly honest look at the plight of the elderly in a society that doesn’t value their contributions, and a powerful reminder of the human cost of poverty.
