The government has instituted a program called the "Battle Royale" where a randomly chosen group of high school students are sent to a remote island, given a random weapon, and forced to fight each other to the death. The last one standing is the winner. The film follows a group of students as they struggle to survive and navigate the moral complexities of the game. The film is an intense, thrilling and often violent exploration of human nature and its capacity for violence, and is often seen as a precursor to the Hunger Games series.
