Hunger is a 2008 British-Irish historical drama film directed by Steve McQueen and starring Michael Fassbender. It tells the story of Bobby Sands, a Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) member who led the 1981 hunger strike in which Irish republican prisoners protested against the conditions of the Maze Prison. During the strike, Sands evolved from an unassuming leader to a figure of world-wide renown, whose death caused a political uproar. The film examines both the physical and mental effects of Sands' hunger strike, as well as the British government's refusal to negotiate with the prisoners. The film is shot in a minimalist style with long takes, and is a powerful and uncompromising portrayal of a real-life tragedy.
