The film explores the tension between free will and moral responsibility, as Alex struggles to reconcile his violent desires with a newfound morality. It also serves as a critique of the dangers of totalitarianism and government control.

As the boys enter their teenage years, they both struggle to make sense of what happened to them and cope with the emotional and psychological damage. Neil becomes a sexual promiscuity, while Brian seeks solace in religion. In the end, they both must come to terms with the truth in order to have any hope of recovering and moving on with their lives.
