The Wizard of Oz is a 1939 American musical fantasy film directed by five directors; Victor Fleming, George Cukor, Mervyn LeRoy, Norman Taurog, Richard Thorpe, and King Vidor. Based on the 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, the film follows Dorothy, a young farm girl living in Kansas, who is swept away to the magical Land of Oz on a cyclone. She embarks on a quest with her new friends, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Lion, to find the Wizard of Oz who they believe can help her return home to Kansas. Along the way, they encounter the Wicked Witch of the West and other obstacles. In the end, the group successfully defeats the witch and is granted their wishes. Dorothy learns that no place is better than home and returns to Kansas with her friends. The film is considered a classic of American cinema and has become an iconic symbol of the fantasy genre.
