The film also stars Michael Caine and Scarlett Johansson, and features a complex plot involving loyalty, betrayal, and the power of illusion.

Through his magical powers, Eisenheim creates illusions that make it seem as though he is communicating with the spirit world, and he also uses his tricks to discredit the prince and save his own life. In the end, the truth about Eisenheim's magic is revealed and he and Sophie are reunited.
