The Seventh Seal is a 1957 Swedish drama film written and directed by Ingmar Bergman. The film follows a medieval knight, Antonius Block (Max von Sydow), and his squire, Jöns (Gunnar Björnstrand), as they return from the Crusades. Death (Bengt Ekerot) has come to take Block's life, but he challenges Death to a game of chess for his life. As the game progresses, Block and Jöns encounter a group of traveling actors, who offer a sense of hope amidst the plague that is ravaging the land. Through a series of philosophical and spiritual conversations, Block comes to terms with his mortality, and realizes that his life has been both meaningless and meaningless. In the end, Block and Jöns come to accept Death, while the actors find hope in the face of mortality. Ultimately, The Seventh Seal is an exploration of faith, and the nature of life and death.
